Summer Camp School-Age Program
SHADES offers 9 weeks of summer camp for 5 to 13 year old campers. Register to attend one week or all 9.
Summer Afterschool Program
In the event a SHADES summer site is named as a KCS Summer Learning Camp location, SHADES will offer limited summer afterschool programming at the location. SHADES Summer Afterschool dates of service will be announced when KCS has made final KCS Summer Learning plan. Please note: SHADES will not hold your child’s space in our full-day summer program contengent upon your child’s acceptance in the KCS Summer Learning Camp. You will need to decide now if you would like to secure your child’s space in the SHADES summer program by completing all registration tasks, paperwork and payments due upon registration. Once registered you are subject to the “SHADES Change and Cancellation Policy” should you change your mind. The only exception to this process is for rising fourth grade students that are mandated by law to attend KCS Summer Learning Camp due to scoring below expectation in reading on the TCAP. SHADES Afterschool pre-registration will be available once KCS finalizes KCS Summer Learning plans.
Summer PreK Extended Learning Program
SHADES Extended Learning Summer PreK program is located at Ft. Sanders Developmental Center and Karns PreK. Scroll down to access preregistration Information.
Please note: On May 4, 2022 the Knox County Board of Education approved to recognize Juneteenth as a Holiday for all year-round KCS employees. SHADES will also be recognizing Juneteenth as a Holiday. All Knox County School facilities and offices will be closed on June 19 in observance of Juneteenth.
Summer will be here soon! Act now to secure your child’s space at SHADES for 9 weeks of summer FUN as we travel through the ages. Each week we will visit a significant period from 66 million AD to present day, learning about history, impact and modern applications in our world today.
Begin the registration process by pre-registering for the school-age summer camps in the green section or the PreK Extended Learning Summer Program in the gold section. Once your have pre-registered online you will be contacted by a SHADES staff member to begin the registration process.
(Note: Pre-registration does not register your camper for the program. You must still complete and submit all summer enrollment paperwork, submit applicable fees and attend a summer orientation before your camper’s space is reserved and guaranteed for summer camps.)

Submit completed paperwork, registration fee and applicable deposits (Note: Registration fees and deposits are non-refundable.)
Once you have completed the pre-registration form, you will be contacted to complete the registration process. You will be given a deadline date (typically 48 hours from the time you are contacted) to attend an orientation and complete and submit all required paperwork and applicable fees. Failure to adhere to the deadline will forfeit your child’s place on the summer waiting list, and we will contact the next family on the list until all available slots are filled. Payments can be made at orientation by check or credit card. Payment can also be made by credit card through the engage app, over the phone or at the site location.

Afterschool Summer
What is Summer Afterschool?
Summer Afterschool is intended to provide extended day service from 2:45-6:00pm to those students enrolled in the KCS Summer Learning Program. Students enrolled in this program are securing a space from 2:45-6:00 for the duration of the KCS Summer Learning Camp days of operation.
Each week afterschool activities will bring a featured time period to life, connecting children’s literature with adventure learning activities. Get ready to explore adventures through the ages!
